Adding an energy storage system to your solar installation makes sense when you want to consume more of the self-generated electricity. In general, AC-coupled storage systems are best suited for retrofitting. The reason for this is the straightforward connection through a battery inverter to the solar inverter. In most cases, there is no need to modify the wiring, and the energy storage system operates seamlessly.

In general, it is advisable to use a DC-capable storage system with a new solar installation, as they are typically more efficient than AC-coupled storage systems.

Energy storage systems can release the stored electricity back to the household grid on either one or three phases. 1-phase energy storage systems can easily power all household consumers but have a limited discharge capacity, whereas, 3-phase energy storage systems can also operate high-power consumers like stoves, electric cars, or heat pumps without any issues, as they can deliver more power on 3 phases compared to one.

There are two ways to connect the storage system to the solar installation: the AC and DC options. In an AC storage system, electricity generated by the PV panels goes into the PV inverter, where it is transformed into household-standard electricity and made available for use. The AC storage system is connected to the PV inverter through a separate storage inverter, usually available as an independent unit. When there is enough power available for charging, the PV inverter directs the electricity into the storage system. A DC storage system is connected directly after the solar installation, before the electricity flows into the PV inverter. The advantage is that the electricity doesn't need to be converted separately on its way to the storage system, as is the case with AC storage. This means that DC storage systems typically achieve a higher level of efficiency.
